Donnie and Quinn were ready to run, the body in the boot and their guilty conscience gone with the wind... that is, until the little girl had disappeared from the boot and appeared in the middle of the road. Very much alive.
I suppose at that moment, the two of us alone in the night with the road to ourselves, Nirvana blasting from the stereo system, we thought we were invincible. We thought we knew everything. And for a moment, it was almost beautiful. The inky sky was the perfect canvas for the glittering dots of stars that sprayed it like the work of an over zealous artist, the moon was perfect, shining down like a spotlight on the convertible and Kurt Cobain's hypnotic crooning provided the best background music to the night. I'd never seen you smile like that. It seemed real, and relaxed as if you'd discarded all your previous demons, just so that I wouldn't worry. Despite what had happened, you smiled for me, Donnie. Miles of long, empty road stretched out before us, beckoning us to go on an adventure. To where? No fucking clue, but who gave a damn? We were free, we were happy, and the body in the trunk had been thrown in a ditch on the way back from the party. We were murderers. And we had just gotten away with it.
Evelyn Hess is a self professed nerd with an obsession for chocolate.
