This story was partly based on the lives that have been touched by a Confederate spy, Percy Townsend. The location of the story begins at the start of the Civil War. He is made the Confederate Ambassador to Great Britain to trade Confederate cotton for English war materials. During his sea journey, he discovers a plot against the future King of England and saves the lives of both Prince Edward and his wife. He becomes a friend of the Royal family and ultimately befriends the rich and famous of the era in England. His friends question him about owning slaves. He becomes disillusioned with slavery when he sees how they are treated. He questions his loyalty and duty but continues with his work. He survives a number of assassination attempts. A captured female assassin is influenced into becoming a double agent. He concludes his business connections in Europe and moves to the Bahamas to supervise the espionage network and the blockade running operations. There, he is persuaded to purchase a black orphan boy in an illicit slave market. He has something in common with the boy he cannot resist. The war is winding down; the Union blockade is keeping out the needed Confederate war materials. The Spy discovers a treacherous Caribbean pirate still operating in the area. The pirate kidnaps his female double agent and holds her hostage. He skillfully kills the pirate and rescues his female double agent He becomes romantically involved with her. Together they both form a love for the young orphan boy and adopt him. The war ends and Percy goes to England to settle Confederate accounts. While there, a terrible storm ravages the Bahamas and drowns his beloved family. He is melancholy and angry with himself in losing his family. He reconciles with his God and returns to Scotland to seek his first love. He finds things have changed. He discovers he fathered a child out of wedlock. He repents, finds peace and contentment there at last.
