Not the Yearbook You Expected is a collection of twenty-two stories from a life in music, whose roads led to nowhere but always came back to New Jersey. The experiences detailed within include everything from playing in front of people inexplicably stripping down to their underwear, to performing in bars full of apathetic patrons, playing for children with cancer, and watching band mates pass away far too young. Here you will find both a cautionary tale and a celebration of what happens when one dedicates their life to music with illusive fame, soul breaking gigs, and constant financial woes. The writing is straight from the gut, containing no grand stories from the halls of the famous, but from an independent creative force trying to make his way in the world with a guitar, a voice, and a cellist. Spanning the years from author Michael Kovacs’ start as a solo acoustic artist all the way through the debut of his rock opera After the Valentines, this book documents one of the strangest career arcs of all time.
